Hot girl summer is over. It’s time for Fit-tober!

Don’t let the spooky temps scare you. As the temperature drops and the days grow shorter, it’s easy to hibernate indoors, wrap yourself in blankets and indulge in comfort foods. However, letting your fitness routine slide during the cooler months can have significant consequences for your health and well-being.

Boosts Immune System

One of the primary reasons to stay active during winter is its positive impact on your immune system. Regular physical activity strengthens your body’s defense mechanisms, making it easier to fend off common winter ailments such as colds and flu. Engaging in moderate exercise enhances the circulation of immune cells, making your body more efficient at detecting and combating viruses and bacteria.

Improves Mental Health

Colder temps and shorter days often bring a gloomy atmosphere, with less sunlight and more time spent indoors. Regular exercise is a natural mood lifter, releasing endorphins that reduce stress and anxiety. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects many people during winter, leading to feelings of depression. Exercise can be a powerful antidote, promoting a sense of well-being and improving overall mental health.

Maintains Weight and Fitness Goals

It’s easy to gain a few extra pounds during the winter months, especially with holiday feasting and cozy nights in. By staying active, you can maintain your fitness goals. Additionally, keeping up with your exercise routine ensures that you’re ready to tackle more intense workouts when spring arrives, allowing you to progress rather than starting from scratch.

Enhances Energy Levels

Contrary to what you might think, exercise doesn’t deplete your energy; it enhances it. Regular physical activity improves cardiovascular health and endurance, making daily tasks feel less exhausting. When you maintain your fitness routine, you’ll find that you have more energy to tackle winter challenges, whether it’s shoveling snow, holiday shopping, or simply keeping up with your busy schedule.

While it’s tempting to use the winter weather as an excuse to slack off, staying active during colder months is vital for your physical and mental well-being. So, bundle up, find activities you enjoy indoors or brave the cold for outdoor winter sports, and keep moving. Never visited our Wellness Center? Now is the perfect time! Contact our Director of Wellness, Amanda Barnes-Tolson, at Amanda@oldhawthorne.com and learn how you can become more involved.

Elevate Your Golf Game and Gear

As the vibrant hues of autumn fade and the golf courses prepare for the winter slumber, avid golfers might find themselves wondering how to keep the golfing spirit alive during the off-season. Fear not, the golf pros at Old Hawthorne have your guide to enhancing your game and upgrading your equipment, ensuring you return to the green stronger and better than ever before.

  • Condition Your Body: Use the off-season to focus on your physical fitness. A strong and flexible body is essential for a powerful swing and injury prevention. Incorporate exercises that enhance core strength, flexibility, and balance. Yoga, Pilates, and targeted weight training can significantly improve your game.
  • Analyze Your Game: Utilize the off-season to assess your strengths and weaknesses. Understanding your flaws is the first step towards improvement. Seek advice from golf instructors and focus on the areas that need the most work, be it your drive, iron shots, or putting.
  • Mental Preparation: Golf is as much a mental game as it is physical. Work on your mental resilience and focus during the off-season. Consider meditation, visualization techniques, or even sports psychology sessions to develop a strong mental game. A composed mind can significantly impact your performance on the course.
  • Equipment Upgrades: Use this down time to upgrade your golf gear. Visit our Golf Shop to ensure your clubs are suited to your swing and ready for next season. Consider investing in custom-fit clubs for a more tailored experience.
  • Educational Resources: Read books, watch instructional videos, and follow professional golfers to gain insights into their techniques and strategies. This is the ideal time to expand your golfing knowledge. You might discover new approaches to your game that you hadn’t considered before.

The off-season is a golden opportunity to refine your skills, strengthen your body, and upgrade your equipment. By dedicating time and effort during the winter months, you can return to the golf course in the spring with renewed confidence and improved abilities. Remember, champions are made in the off-season, so seize this time to transform your golf game and gear for the better.

Want to learn more about how we can help you improve your game during the off-season? Contact Kevin Stull, Director of Instruction, at Kevin@oldhawthorne.com and ask how he can help you prepare for next year!

Falling In Love With Golf

Many people think of golf as a summer sport or hobby. But it might be even more enjoyable during the off season. Golfing in the fall at Old Hawthorne can be preferable for some golfers for several reasons:

  • Cooler Temperatures: Fall typically brings cooler and more comfortable temperatures than the uncomfortable summer heat. Playing golf in milder weather makes the experience more enjoyable, as you won’t have to contend with extreme heat and humidity.
  • Less Crowded Courses: Many golf courses tend to be less crowded in the fall. This means shorter wait times, a more relaxed pace of play, and a quieter, more peaceful golfing experience.
  • Beautiful Scenery: The changing foliage at Old Hawthorne provides a stunning backdrop for your golf game. The vibrant colors of the leaves can make the course more visually appealing and create a unique atmosphere.
  • Firmer Course Conditions: Fall can bring firmer and faster course conditions. The ground dries out after the summer rains, and the grass is now in excellent condition, providing an opportunity for better ball roll and more strategic play.
  • Fewer Insects: Compared to the summer months, fall is a season with fewer insects and pests. This makes your golfing experience more comfortable without the annoyance of swarming and pestering insects.

It’s important to note that preferences for golfing conditions vary among golfers. While some people may prefer the cooler, quieter, and more visually appealing aspects of fall golf, others may enjoy the challenge of summer golf and the lush, green course conditions it offers.

One of the many benefits of having a membership at Old Hawthorne is that you can enjoy our courses during whichever season you prefer! If you’re interested in becoming a golf guru, contact our Director of Instruction, Kevin Stull, at Kevin@oldhawthorne.com. We would love to see you out on the course!

Youth Sports at OH

At Old Hawthorne, we offer a wide variety of activities for kids of all ages. From junior golf, junior tennis and swim team, we have something that will keep your child active and learning! Plus, joining a sports team at a young age can offer numerous benefits for physical, mental, and social development. Here are 6 reasons to get your child involved in sports:

1. Physical Fitness: Participation in a sports team encourages regular physical activity, helping to improve cardiovascular health, muscle strength, flexibility, and overall physical fitness. It lays the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and can help combat childhood obesity. Physical activity, including sports, is a natural stress reliever. Playing sports can help children manage stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges.

2. Health & Development: Sports require various motor skills, such as coordination, balance, agility, and hand-eye coordination. Engaging in sports at a young age can help refine these skills, which can be beneficial in other areas of life as well. Many sports require strategic thinking, quick decision-making, and the ability to adapt to changing situations. Engaging in these mental aspects of sports can enhance cognitive skills. Developing an early interest in sports and physical activity can contribute to a lifelong habit of staying active, promoting overall health and reducing the risk of various chronic diseases.

3. Teamwork: Being part of a sports team teaches children how to work with others toward a common goal. They learn the value of cooperation, communication, and respecting the contributions of each team member. Over time, young athletes may have the opportunity to take on leadership roles within their team. This experience can help them develop leadership qualities, decision-making skills, and the ability to motivate and inspire their peers.

4. Socializing: Joining a sports team exposes children to a diverse group of peers with shared interests. This interaction enhances their social skills, helps them make new friends, and can create lasting friendships. Healthy competition teaches kids to strive for excellence, push their boundaries, and constantly improve. It also teaches them to handle competition gracefully and show respect for opponents.

5. Discipline: Regular practice and training sessions instill discipline and time management skills. Balancing school, sports, and other activities teaches kids to manage their time effectively and prioritize their responsibilities. Being part of a sports team encourages young athletes to set and work towards both short-term and long-term goals. This skill is transferable to academic, personal, and professional aspects of life.

6. Self-Confidence: As children improve their skills and contribute to their team’s success, their self-esteem and self-confidence can grow. Overcoming challenges and achieving personal milestones boost their sense of accomplishment. Sports involve wins and losses, challenges, and setbacks. Dealing with these experiences fosters resilience, teaches coping mechanisms, and helps kids learn to bounce back from disappointments.

It’s important to note that while there are many benefits, the experience should be enjoyable for the child. Pressure or excessive focus on competition can potentially lead to stress and burnout. The key is to strike a balance between enjoyment, skill development, and healthy competition.

If you’re interested in signing your child up for one of our exciting youth activities, contact our Membership Director, Ariana Schneider, at 573-442-5280. See you at the Club!

Why Old Hawthorne?

Since opening in 2007, we’ve been warmly received as the place for the best round of golf and the hottest residential community in Mid-Missouri!

  • The Club at Old Hawthorne sits on 631 acres of what was once a horse farm, hence the horse featured in our logo. So, where stallions once romped and roamed the rolling hills, today golfers stride manicured fairways and families select wooded lots to put down their own roots. The original portion of the clubhouse was built in 1938 as an exact replica of President Andrew Jackson’s home, “The Hermitage.”
  • The centerpiece of Old Hawthorne is the championship golf course, which was designed by renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills. Hills is known for his strategic designs that incorporate the natural landscape. Our course features rolling fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and challenging greens, providing an excellent golfing experience for players of all skill levels.
  • Old Hawthorne offers exclusive membership opportunities to its patrons. Members can enjoy a range of amenities, including the golf course, practice facilities, a pro shop, pools, tennis courts, and a clubhouse. The clubhouse features dining options, event spaces, and other recreational facilities, making it a hub for socializing and relaxation.
  • Pickleball players on the court at Old Hawthorne in Columbia Missouri
  • Social at Old Hawthorne Golf Club in Columbia MO
  • Over the years, we’ve gained a reputation for hosting some pretty incredible golf tournaments. For example, the Missouri State Amateur Championship, the Columbia Golf Foundation Junior City Championship, the NCAA Tiger Invitational, and the American Junior Golf Association Stan Utley Youth Golf Foundation Junior Championship. These events attract top golfers from around the region and contribute to the club’s recognition in the golfing community.
  • We actively engage with the local community. Old Hawthorne has partnered with charitable organizations and hosted fundraising events to support various causes. The club also offers junior golf and tennis programs and provides opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills.
  • Did you know, we have been consistently ranked as one of the best golf courses in Missouri? The club’s commitment to excellence and its contribution to the sport of golf have garnered recognition from both members and golfing authorities.

The Club at Old Hawthorne continues to thrive as a premier golf destination in the region. With its well-maintained course, top-notch facilities, and a vibrant community, it remains an integral part of Columbia’s golfing culture.

Golf Etiquette: A Guide to Polite and Respectful Play

Three male golfers on green, one holds the flag, other two high-five

At Old Hawthorne, we believe golf is a sport that values tradition, integrity, and respect. Golf etiquette is a set of unwritten rules and guidelines that govern behavior on the course, ensuring a pleasant and enjoyable experience for all players. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or new to the game, understanding and practicing golf etiquette is essential. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

1. Dress Code: Respect the dress code of the golf course. Old Hawthorne requires collared shirts, tailored shorts or pants, and appropriate footwear. No jeans, t-shirts, or clothing with offensive slogans. Following the dress code shows respect for the game, the course, and fellow players.

2. Be Punctual: Arrive on time for your tee time. Being punctual not only shows consideration for other golfers but also helps maintain the pace of play. If you’re running late, inform the Old Hawthorne staff or your playing partners.

3. Quiet and Stillness: Golf is a game that demands concentration. When a player is addressing the ball or making a swing, maintain silence and avoid unnecessary movement. Keep your conversations and distractions to a minimum. Turn off or silence your mobile phone.

4. Safety First: Safety is paramount on the golf course. Before swinging, ensure that no one is within your striking range. Shout “Fore!” if your shot is heading toward another player or group. Be vigilant about the location of other golfers and be aware of your surroundings.

5. Repair the Course: Treat the golf course with care and respect. Repair divots by replacing them or using the provided sand mixture. Smooth out footprints or any damage caused in bunkers using a rake. On the green, repair ball marks using a repair tool or tee in a gentle upward motion.

6. Pace of Play: Maintaining a good pace of play is crucial for an enjoyable round. Be mindful of the time you spend on each shot. Be ready to play when it’s your turn and avoid excessive practice swings. If you’re falling behind, allow faster groups to play through. Conversely, if you catch up to a slower group, be patient and wait for an appropriate opportunity to pass.

7. Golf Cart Etiquette: If you’re using a golf cart, follow the rules and guidelines. Stay on designated paths whenever possible, especially near tees, greens, and in wet areas. Avoid driving on the course’s fringe or rough. Always park the cart where it doesn’t interfere with other players’ shots or impede the flow of play.

8. Honesty and Integrity: Golf is a game of integrity, and maintaining honesty in scoring is fundamental. Keep an accurate score, follow the rules of golf, and adhere to the principles of fair play and sportsmanship, even in competitive situations.

Golf etiquette reflects the values of respect, integrity, and sportsmanship that make the game so special. By following these guidelines, you contribute to a positive and enjoyable golfing experience for yourself and others. Remember, golf is not only about the shots you take but also about how you conduct yourself on and off the course. Happy golfing!
